Muniguda Vision Centre opens; the first of many for Odisha state

The first Wen Giving Foundation Vision Centre, in partnership with LV Prasad Eye Institute, opened in Muniguda, Rayagada district of Odisha on January 27 2019.

The Vision Centre, which is located around 380 kms from Bhubaneswar and 60 km away from the district headquarters of Rayagada where LVPEI has its secondary level service centre, will provide high-quality primary eye care services to the underserved and marginalized population of the area of which approximately 38% is tribal.

All speakers at the launch event expressed their gratitude towards LVPEI for selecting Muniguda for a vision centre. They said that this is an extremely underserved area in terms of health facilities in general and eye care facilities in particular. Speakers from LVPEI gratefully acknowledged Wen Giving Foundation and Mission for Vision for supporting this initiative.

On the first day, a total of 15 patients were screened at the VC, 3 spectacles dispensed out of 8 prescribed and 6 patients identified and referred for surgery to LVPEI’s Rayagada secondary centre.

Update July 2019: This centre is well on its way to achieving its first-year targets of screening for refractive error by vision technicians based at the centre and through outreach initiatives in schools and rural communities.  The Vision Centre is equipped to dispense affordable spectacles and patients identified, patients are referred on to LV Prasad’s secondary centre in Rayagada for surgery and other interventions.
