Wen Giving sponsors the construction of a Community Eye Hospital in Gaya

On 18 January, Wen Giving Foundation along with partners Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra (NBJK) and Mission for Vision (MFV) opened a Community Eye Hospital in the district of Gaya, Bihar state, India.

This hospital will provide desperately needed eye health care to the lowest caste of Bihar state; one of the poorest states in India.

There are 28 states in India. Bihar state has a population of 100 million with an average income of only 50 cents per day.

A Community Eye Hospital (18,000 sq ft) usually provides services to a population of 500,000. As this is the only eye hospital of its kind in Bihar state, it will service an incredible 7.5 million.

India has the highest number of a visually impaired people, with over 25 million being affected with certain parts of the country especially East and North East India being the most impacted due to poverty, inadequate infrastructure and human resources.

The hospital will provide services within its campus and will also adopt an extensive outreach strategy to reach out to remote and marginalised vulnerable communities.  It will adopt a self-financing approach, in that, those who can afford to pay for services will be charged, while those who can’t, will be treated for free or at a subsidised rate.
